The Murray Natural Gas System supplies natural gas to the City of Murray, portions of Calloway and Graves Counties and transports gas for the City of Hardin in Marshall County. Murray Natural Gas serves approximately 7,837 customers with residential and commercial customers using approximately 50% of the demand and industrial customers using the other 50%.
The City of Murray is served by two transmission companies: Texas Gas and ANR Pipeline. The Texas Gas Transmission supply line is a six-inch line with 500 psi pressure main that runs along KY 121. The ANR Pipeline is an eight-inch line with 400 psi pressure main that runs west into the city near Vanderbilt Chemical Company.
The system is mostly steel (with cathodic protection) and operates under the direction of the City of Murray Department of Public Works and Utilities. Gas system employees install all gas mains and house service lines, while licensed merchants provide house piping in accordance with state plumbing and NFPA regulations.

Due to Department of Transportation regulations, a representative from Murray Natural Gas must evaluate all gas piping and appliances before a gas meter can be turned on. This evaluation is to ensure the safe operation of natural gas. It will also allow us to inform you of any unsafe conditions in your system if they are present at this time. An adult, with a valid state, picture identification card must be present for this evaluation and must sign all necessary paperwork at the time the system is evaluated. When you apply for gas service at Murray Municipal Utilities, you will need to let the CSR know if you prefer a morning or afternoon appointment for this evaluation. This same policy will apply for transfer of gas service. Murray Natural Gas representatives will also be able to light pilot lights during these evaluations for a small fee that will be added to your first bill. A Murray Natural Gas representative will also turn off gas meters when gas service is disconnected. For more information or questions about these new policies, call Murray Natural Gas at (270) 762-0336.
