Sanitation Department Functions

This division of the Department of Public Works collects and transports solid waste from city customers to the City of Murray Transfer Station. It is responsible for the following tasks:


  1. Providing the automated collection and transportation of residential refuse for approximately 6000 residential dwellings, Monday through Thursday , on a once per week schedule. City residents are furnished a 96 gallon container which must be placed curbside on the scheduled collection day. Collection is made using automated compactor trucks with a single driver/operator. Walk-up service is available for disabled and/ or handicapped residents and a reduced rate is available for residents 65 years of age or older who live alone.
  2. Providing the automated collection and transportation of commercial refuse for business establishments via the use of either 96 gallon residential style carts or commercial 2, 4, 6 or 8 yard dumpsters. Commercial service is provided via a front loading compactor truck with a single driver/ operator up to 6 days per week, Monday through Saturday.
  3. Providing for the collection and transportation of refuse for residential, commercial and Industrial customers with special needs.Refused is collected in either a City furnished construction/roll-off container and/or a customer owned self-contained compactor unit. These containers are collected and transported, via a hoist truck and driver, to and from the Transfer Station where the contents are emptied for disposal.
  4. Providing special collection services, otherwise known as "Special Pick-ups", for residential and commercial customers for items which cannot be placed within their respective trash receptacles for disposal. These items include, but are not limited to, items such as mattresses, furniture, brush and household appliances.
  5. Provide the material and equipment support for the annual Spring Brush and Fall Leaf pick-ups for City residents and business performed be the Street Department.
  6. Provide and maintain a Recycling Collection Point on Andrus Drive for City and County residents for the collection of paper, cardboard, metal(tin) can, aluminum cans, glass bottles, and plastic.
